Welcome to PoetSpot!

Hello and welcome to PoetSpot, a place for poetry at your own pace. My name is Nicola (she, her, hers), and I started this blog to help emerging poets strengthen their writing through the use of poetics. It is my hope that this blog will be a fun and supportive place for poets to convene, hone their craft, and have access to writing resources.

A little bit about me: I have been writing poetry since I could join letters together to form words. My first "real" poem when I was five asked the question, "What if dogs ate at the breakfast table like people do?" It was published on my grandfather's refrigerator...still one of my crowning achievements. I graduated with my Bachelor's degree in Creative Writing, with a concentration in poetry. After that, I went directly into a Master's program for Publishing & Writing. It's okay dear reader, I don't know what I was thinking either. I've been involved with writing groups, literary magazines, and poetry slams, and I love the connected-ness that comes from being in a poetry-centered community. And so PoetSpot was born!

"But Nicola, you mentioned something about poetics...what in the world is that?"

I am so glad you asked.

Plain and simple: poetics is the study of linguistic techniques in both poetry and literature. These techniques and devices can be used to "spice up" your work (we season our poems in this household). Here are just some examples of poetic devices that I will be going over in this blog. You may even already know some of them. If so, that's great! It'll be a refresher course. If not, then let's explore!

- Repetition

- Alliteration

- Metaphor

- Simile

- Assonance

- Onomatopoeia

- Hyperbole

- Personification

Thanks so much for reading, and I can't wait to get started on this journey together!

Until next time,

Nicola
